Climate change is not only studied by the increase in greenhouse gases and changes in temperature at a global level. It can also be studied through bioindicators known as tree rings. Dendrology is responsible for studying fossil trees that also provide information about the climate of past eras.

In this field we know that it is known as dendroclimatology. We must bear in mind that the study of climate change is essential for the management of natural resources both today and the future. We cannot plan what our economic activities were in the future based on the study of the present. It is necessary to know the different fluctuations that the climate has had throughout the history of the planet. These fluctuations can be known quite well thanks to Dendrology. Tree rings can reflect a great deal of information not only about temperatures and tree growth, but also about the evolution of temperatures and environmental conditions.

For the Faculty of Horticulture we teach subjects such as botany, phytocenology, geobiocenology and ecophysiology of tree species. Subject called Experts Block is ensured for students of all faculties. The Department is a guarantee holder for the field of Management of Natural Resources of Tropics and Subtropics and ensures teaching of basic biology subjects, from botany and dendrology, through utility plants of tropics and subtropics, to ecosystems of the tropics and subtropics and their vegetation ecology.

Guarantor of the subject is doc. Guarantor of the study program Arboriculture is doc. Scientific and research activities of the Department are of wide scope, from cell level to landscape level. Exact ecophysiological methods are connected with solution of geobiocenological typology and ecology issues. Science and research are widely developed in four areas, the area of physiology of trees, area of dendrology and botany, area of geobiocenology and ecology, area of tropical and subtropical forestry.
